So we've been in our new space for about 3 months now and we're loving it! It has been such a blessing to be part of a community and begin to invest in a neighborhood. We're located in Humboldt Park, but just so happen to be within the bounds of a smaller community called Paseo Boricua.
Taken from http://www.paseoboricua.com/, "Paseo Boricua, which stretches along Division Street from Western Avenue to Mozart, represents a microcosm of the Puerto Rican historical and cultural experience. The 50 light poles adorned with laser-etched wrought iron banners, representing images of the three cultural experiences that define the Puerto Rican people (the Taino, Spanish and West African,) the 16 placitas along the walkway; and the variety of businesses with a Puerto Rican accent, all testify to this reality."
We are proud to be a part of this stretch of Division. While we have no Puerto Rican heritage ourselves, we have already grown to love this community and it's exciting culture. We have made many connections with local businesses and organizations. The people at the Spanish Action Committee of Chicago stopped by early on and welcomed us to the neighborhood, offering their assistance and a desire to collaborate in the future. Not far from SACC, is a personal favorite of mine, Paisano Tacos! I have a vegetarian burrito, hold the sour cream, about once a week...it's a highlight to be sure. Right next door to us is Fun Wear, a screenprinter and embroiderer we have started to work with, there are great guys over there, the hardware store on the corner was handy when we were getting our space ready to open, and we can't wait to make some connections at Batey Urbano. A couple weeks ago we went to the greenhouse opening for Albizu Campos High School and last week Enrique Salgado came by to orient us to the Humboldt Park online community portal. We have met so many more already and look forward to continuing these relationships and making even more connections.
In honor of this great community, we are premiering a Paseo Boricua t-shirt line! Right now, we just have one design introducing this line, but don't worry, many more will come. Check it out here: http://kinglizzyapparel.blogspot.com/p/paseo-boricua.html
